Primary Services of the Project:  
  • Direct scholarship assistance to 61 low income, first generation freshman and sophomores ($57,000 in 2005-2006)
  • Individualized learning skills instruction
  • Content area tutoring (individualized and small group)
  • Personal and academic counseling
  • Graduate school advising and GRE preparation
  • Scholarship search assistance
  • Support services for students with cognitive disabilities
  • Facilitated study group instruction in specific courses
  • Individualized support for using computers and internet for research

2005-2006 Achievements:
  • More than 94% of all participants met or exceeded UNH's GPA requirement for good academic standing
  • Majority of participants report improvement in grades after 3-5 contact hours with staff
  • Participants demonstrate substantial gains in motivation and critical thinking skills that are significantly correlated with academic success at UNH
  • Based on current SSS longitudinal study of participants vs. students who are grant-eligible but who do not participate, SSS participants exhibit higher retention and graduation rates, greater improvement in grades and lower academic suspension rates
